Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome with multiple symptoms. It is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and stiffness, with symmetrically distributed tender points. The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. But several studies have found that more than 80% of patients with fibromyalgia have 2 to 3 times higher concentrations of substance P in their cerebrospinal fluid than do healthy individuals. Substance P is involved in the transmission of pain impulses from peripheral receptors to the central nervous system. Substance P is stored in sensory nerve, an important neurotransmitter involved in the transmission of pain.

Treatment of fibromyalgia pain and accompanying syndromes is complex. In our clinic, we recommend a multidisciplinary approach. It comprises physical therapy, massage, patient education, and psychological support in addition to medications. We also include traditional Chinese medicine, such as cupping, acupuncture and nutritional consultation.
